The German Alpine Road by camper

The German Alpine Road - 450 km of pure nature!

Dear LionCamper,
First of all, a little personal foreword from me... In the past it was often said “the further away the better”. Traveling wherever you want and when you want – what we all took for granted until recently is currently denied us for an indefinite period of time due to the Corona crisis. What now? Well, I would also describe myself as a bit of a globetrotter. I lived in Hawaii and the Philippines and traveled a lot. This limitless freedom was always deeply anchored in my spirit. Not being able to travel without restrictions for some time is probably more than unusual for everyone. Of course also for us, the LionCamper team!

However, this shows us once again how lucky we are to be able to live in freedom in such a privileged society. However, my personal travel radius has become increasingly smaller in recent years because I have noticed how little I actually know about my own homeland. We realize that most of you already have road trip destinations such as Croatia, Norway or France. Unfortunately, the next few weeks are still very uncertain regarding freedom of travel. What if the respective border is not yet open again by then? You could now drive yourself crazy and ruminate endlessly about circumstances that we unfortunately cannot change - OR we make the best of the current situation, adapt and react to it according to the motto: “Challenging times require more flexibility”.

Be flexible and don't let your well-deserved vacation be completely taken away! Reacts to the crisis with a plan B and off you go: Vacation at home in beautiful Bavaria, because this is likely to be possible again from the beginning of May. We hope you enjoy reading the article and looking at the beautiful photos.

Kind regards, your Andi from Team LionCamper

“The German Alpine Road” – Heard of it often, but where exactly is it?

The oldest German holiday route stretches over 450 km from Lindau on Lake Constance to Schönau on Königssee in Berchtesgadener Land. This historical route was first mentioned in 1879 as part of a trip that King Maximilian II had already undertaken in 1858. However, the entire length of the route was only completed in 1960 after decades of construction. On this tour you don't cross any national borders and so you don't have to worry about border closures etc. In terms of natural and cultural diversity, the “Route of the Bavarian Originals”, as the German Alpine Road is also called, cannot be beaten. Countless mountain lakes with turquoise water and over 25 palaces and castles line the route. And all of this always with a fantastic mountain panorama of many different German and Austrian mountain ranges in the background. You don't even know where to start. Perhaps best with a route overview. Here you can see the route in its entirety:

The “Bavarian Originals” route takes you through the most popular and beautiful holiday regions of Allgäu and Upper Bavaria and is signposted in both directions. So, in principle it doesn't matter whether you start the tour in Lindau or in Schönau, because the journey to the “start” is the same from Munich, for example, at around two hours each. It's best to do this depending on the weather forecast for the different regions 🙂 And you know what's the best thing about it? Short travel times and daily stages mean far more time for the beautiful things in camper life: hiking, cycling, swimming, barbecuing, sitting in a camping chair under the awning with a cold beer, strolling through rustic Bavarian towns or just lying in the sun with a book Read the postcard scenery around you 🙂 There are countless great campsites and motorhome parking spaces in the middle of nature along the entire route. You can find a list of 75 places including addresses, homepages and contact details HERE for download. These include many designated and unmanaged parking spaces that promise solitude and do not notice the crisis. Our friends, Bayerische Fernwege eV and the tourism agency Alpin Consult have even made the effort to provide the complete GPS data for the entire route. So you can use it directly with the navigation system and / or the smartphone. Click HERE for downloading the route in different file formats for different devices.

How long should you take for this route? Well, of course, as always, it depends entirely on your intentions and time frame. Personally, we are not fans of long daily journeys and sometimes spontaneously set up camp in beautiful places for several nights. How and where you like it! Great examples include the Isarhorn nature campsite near Mittenwald or a mobile home parking space directly on the banks of Lake Spitzingsee. If I want to go on a particular hike and the weather isn't ideal today, then I'll just stay one night longer than planned. If the parking space right on the lake is so beautiful, then it becomes one more book. That's the great thing about a camping holiday, YOU decide 🙂 Even if it seems unusual to many, we would actually recommend taking between one and two weeks for the route. Especially those who like hiking, mountaineering or cycling are a bit overwhelmed by the overabundance of possible tours along the route. To browse and search for cycling and mountain tours, I can definitely recommend the apps “Alpenvereinaktiv” and “Bergfex Touren”. And if you're crazy about mountains like us, you should of course always have the “Peakfinder” app installed, which is also free, because it tells you the names and heights of every peak around you 🙂

If you like to have your bike with you when camping, you are of course twice right on the German Alpine Road. Go around the lake at the campsite in the evening or parts of the famous Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path take with you as a day trip. This cycle path, which also stretches over 453 km across the Allgäu, Upper Bavaria and the German Alps, often runs close to the Alpine road route. Regarding the Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg, an extra article will follow after we have cycled it ourselves selbst However, below is a small foretaste!

I could easily keep typing for days, describing and telling everything down to the smallest detail, but I don't want to. Because you should experience the route yourself and in your own way! Make yourself a picture of the beauty of our homeland and give your holiday at home in Bavaria a chance. You will not be disappointed and you will not miss anything. We can guarantee that 🙂 Distant camper destinations like Sweden or Corsica will still exist a little later this year or just next year. Thank God we don't run away from it. Be flexible, treat yourself to your well-deserved vacation and don't let the crisis get you down! We don't do that either. With this in mind, see you soon and stay healthy!
